From Sheep to Shawl – Course of the Week

Has anyone ever said to you, “Oh, I like that top.  Where did you get it?”  How great would it be if instead of saying the store where you bought it, you could respond, “Actually, I made it myself.  I sheared a sheep, wove and dyed the wool, and then created this wonderful garment.”  You have to admit that it would be really cool.  Well now you can, with this From Sheep to Shawl Course at Antioch University New England (AUNE).  Not only do you learn how the process works, you also learn the history behind it.

The process of turning wool into cloth is an important part of life in many cultures, both historically and in the present day.  Participants will experience for themselves every step from sheep to shawl, including carding, spinning, making and using natural dyes, and weaving.  Then they will be able to show off their creations and get to respond to all the “where-did-you-get-that?” compliments with “Oh, I made it”.

Course of the Week – Private Investigator Course

Maple Academy, a distance education school in the UK, has a wide variety of courses available, but we were quite intrigued by one of them.  They provide a Private Investigator Course to learn all the techniques that classic detectives, like Sherlock Holmes, have made famous.

Students will learn how to trace missing persons, surveillance techniques, do process serving, and handle matrimonial and domestic cases.  The great thing about this course is that it allows for a variety of jobs like debt collecting, security, and general detective stuff.  Before you know it, you will be just like Dog the Bounty Hunter (who has his own reality TV show, btw).  All the courses at this school are distance programs, which means you can complete it in your own home.

Course of the Week – Gladiators!

Share
Email

This summer twenty students from the University of Regensburg in Germany plan to try and live in the style of Roman gladiators and stage a battle for scientific research.  Over the next few months, the participants will be preparing for the unusual project that concludes in a multiple day non-stop Gladiator course.

The student warriors, who are all studying various disciplines at the university, won’t be eating pizza or hamburgers during their training. Instead they’ll have berries and white beans on their plates as recommend by the ancient Roman doctor Galen.

“From the gladiators, we know almost nothing,” says the historian and project manager Joseph Löffl. He jokes that it is difficult to learn anything from the images of the stage coach races from “Ben Hur”.  Löffl and his research colleagues intend to look at things like learning to fight wearing bronze helmets that weigh almost five kilos.  The participants will not be allowed girlfriends, showers, or washing machines.  We forsee it will be a real challenge.  We wish them luck!

Create your own pair that represent you? Espacio Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires, Argentina is a first class fashion and design school that offeres a Shoe Design Course.  It teaches you to design and create your own shoes, from classic pumps to sandles with and without heels, and from little strappy numbers to ballet flats. The objective of the course  is to introduce students to the process of making shoes, combining originality with practicality – learning step by step.  One of our team members is currently taking this course, and even considers it her dream job.

Not planning on being in Buenos Aires any time soon? The school also offers all of its courses online!

wigs

Of all the different types of schools and courses, who would have thought that there could be an entire school centered around the making of wigs?  Well, there is and Educaedu has found it.

Perukarstwo Bodagar in Warsaw, Poland is a school devoted to wig making.  Their Contemporary Wigs Making Course is quite intensive.  It consists of classes 4 days-a-week, 8 hours-a-day for a total of 7 months!  After something like that, anyone would become a wig expert.

In the course you will learn to make wigs for television, film and theatre as well as events such as weddings.  A large portion of the wigs made go to people who have lost their hair for medical reasons.  At the end of the course you will receive a Professional Wig Maker Certificate.

Some topics include:

  • Wig Making Techniques
  • Wig Hairdressing
  • Wig History

Online Language Learning

iphone

With the advancement of faster internet connections and the growth of social networks, schools have introduced a wide range of internet-based language learning programs.  They are great for people who are interested in learning a new language, but cannot make it to class.  These programs work because they allow students to interact in real time with instructors in other countries, gain access to their lesson plans wherever they are in the world, and communicate with virtual pen pals.

One downside is that it is always hard to work on your own.  To help with motivation, online language programs have introduced crossword puzzles, interactive videos and other games to reward users for making progress.

Online language learning is not restricted to just computers either.  Applications for smartphones, like the iPhone, are now being created to help users learn wherever they are.  Students can review vocabulary or look up words while they are on the bus or waiting at the doctor’s office.

Here are some examples of courses in different parts of the world:

Preliminary Spoken and Written English Course – Australia

French Course – Chile

Russian Course – Brazil

German as a Foreign Language Course – Germany

Do not worry about the location. Since they are online, you can take them wherever you want in the world.

Course of the Week – Bachelor of Lion Taming?

lion tamerEveryone experiences a moment in their life where they want to “run away with the circus”.  Usually, this desire fades away with age.  We grow up, have families, and have to deal with our own children.  But do we really have to lose this childhood dream?

The Universidad Mesoamericana in Puebla, Mexico does not think so.  They are now offering a Bachelor of Contemporary Drama and Circus Techniques*.  Students will learn what it takes to become part of the performance of a traditional circus as well as more modern versions, like Cirque de Soleil.

Julio Revolledo Cárdenas, director of the program, says it is the first of its kind in Latin America.  Becoming a clown, swinging around as a trapeze artist, and juggling chainsaws are all possibilities with this course.

eastwoodHave you seen Invictus yet? What about Gran Torino? Million Dollar Baby? Changeling?   (We could go on…)

Turning eighty years-old in May with 70 films as an actor and 30 as a director, Clint Eastwood has been working in Hollywood for the better half of a century.  His films are of a certain genre, movies that speak of the human condition and the passing of time.  He continues to work from both sides of the camera, and doesn´t look like  slowing down any time soon.  If anything, he is producing arguably the best work of his career.

AAMNBA (Asociación Amigos del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes) a school in Buenos Aires, Argentina has a summer course called Clint Eastwood: The Last of the Classic Filmmakers.  If you have not seen any of the movies mentioned above, or you have and you feel like watching them again, this will definitely “make your day”.clint-eastwood-picture-1
